ST. GEORGE — Region 10 high schools will be well-represented at the 4A state wrestling tournament this weekend in Richfield.

Both boys and girls competed at a Divisional round held in St. George last weekend to determine accurate seeding for the 4A brackets at state.

“That way the seeds are fair and even by the time you get to state,” Snow Canyon coach Nick Lang told St. George News. “The brackets will have the top 16 wrestlers in each weight class and they will be seeded evenly. That means the winners will be true state champions.”

The boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams from Region 10 and Region 11 converged on Snow Canyon and Dixie High Schools for the Divisional round, which came a week after Snow Canyon won its third consecutive Region 10 championship.

The Warriors did not lose a single dual in region competition for the third year in a row and went on to finish second as a team at the Divisional round.

Winning Divisional was 4A defending state champion and powerhouse Mountain Crest with 240 points. Snow Canyon was a close second at 236.

Rounding out the top five were all Region 11 squads: Bear River, Ridgeline and Green Canyon.

Kaden Guymon won the 120-pound class for the Warriors last Saturday, setting him up as a top seed at state.

“It was a good, tough match,” Guymon told St. George News as he prepared to step onto the podium. He said that Regional and Divisional victories are nice, but Snow Canyon has been on a one-track mission, to claim the school’s first state wrestling title.

“We’ve been prepping for state since the start,” Guymon said. “We’ve had a great season and we feel like we’ve got a really good chance.”

Snow Canyon freshman Nia Hagler continued her outstanding rookie campaign, winning the girls’ 125-pound class at Divisional and claiming a No. 1 seed at state.

“Feel great. These competitions are so good for the experience,” Hagler said. “I’m so lucky to have this opportunity to come here and compete.”

Hagler said she’s been wrestling for two years or so.

“With this sport, it’s all about putting the work in,” she said. “If you don’t have the right mindset, then chances are you’re not going to do very well in the sport. But that’s probably why it’s the most rewarding sport there is. Maybe I’m biased, but I think it is.”

Like her teammate Guymon, Hagler has one goal this weekend in Richfield.

“Take first. I’m going to work my best,” she said.

Hurricane’s Seth Armstrong claimed a tense 4-2 overtime decision to win the boys’ 132-pound class.

“I just knew if I went after it and took a good shot and just kept my head all the way there, then I’d be able to do it,” Armstrong said after collecting his first-place medal.

“I made sure to stay in good position and I knew I could do it,” he added. “I’ve had a few setbacks this year, but we’ll get after it. Go rip it up at state.”

Armstrong noted that the Tigers did a good job battling through adversity during the season, which should help prepare them for state.

“We’ve got a lot of stuff to work on and we’ll get after it next week,” Armstrong said. “We had a really good season, won a ton of duels, lost to Snow Canyon in our last duel but we just need to come back to state and prove we can do it. We’ll get it.”

Lily Pomeroy won her championship bout at Divisional and will be a No. 1 seed for Pine View.

“I’m super excited. I’m super happy about it,” Pomeroy said, noting the hours of hard work and effort that has gone into her season. “My goal since the beginning of the year has been to take state.”
