CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Just a short drive north of town, The Ledges of St. George integrates a state-of-the-art, award-winning golf course into the magnificent natural grandeur of Southern Utah’s dramatic high desert outcroppings.

Although the course is renowned for incredible views of colorful cliffs and rugged landscapes, it also carries a reputation for being one of the more challenging in the area. Recently, course management has taken measures to increase the enjoyment of playing The Ledges for both average and expert golfers, including a renovation of the 13th green that just reopened last week.

General manager Chad Pettingill said the 13th hole, a 419-yard par 4 near the canyon’s edge, was regarded by many players as the most challenging and frustrating on the course. The narrow, three-tiered green sloped away from the fairway, and balls frequently rolled right over it.

In February, The Ledges closed the green complex and temporarily shortened the hole to a par 3 while improvements were made to increase its playability. Construction crews hauled in over 50 massive truckloads of dirt to expand and lift the green by as much as 8 feet in certain places.

The green complex has been completely redesigned, Pettingill said. Now, it tilts toward the fairway, giving golfers a more favorable approach shot.

“As they hit onto the green from the fairway, they can see it better,” he added. “The ball’s going to hold on the green a lot more easily.”

Over the summer, The Ledges has introduced new agronomic practices that will keep the course in premier playing condition year-round. The grass surrounding several of the greens has been cut much shorter, allowing more margin for error in players’ short game. Instead of being forced to chip out of the taller grass if they miss the green, players have the option to use either a wedge or a putter.

“Average golfers are now going to be able to putt on some of these approaches,” Pettingill said. “Basically, we want to make it more playable.”

Additionally, new red tee boxes are being installed on some of the longer holes. The tees will be moved closer to the greens, making The Ledges more accessible and enjoyable for women and senior players who don’t carry a lot of distance in their drives or fairway shots

Along with 18 holes of championship golf, players will find a driving range and practice facility, individual and group lessons and a lounge with golf-inspired drinks at The Ledges. The course hosts weekly men’s and women’s leagues year-round, providing players with an opportunity to meet other local golfers and compete for money and prizes.

After playing a round, golfers can explore the updated menu at the Fish Rock Grille. Located within the clubhouse, the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner plus Sunday brunch and recently welcomed international executive chef Wayne M. Martin.

The Ledges offers a world-class golf experience unlike anything else in Southern Utah. Designed by Matt Dye, the 7,200-yard, par-72 course features impressive red rock backdrops, immaculately designed greens and expansive views. The surrounding desert environment makes for great year-round golfing weather and is the perfect place to stay and play with on-site vacation rentals.
