Back-to-back crashes in St. George slow rush-hour traffic

ST. GEORGE — Failure to yield at a left turn caused two separate automobile collisions Thursday evening in St. George, police say.

The first collision occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in the vicinity of 155 North and 1000 East. St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News that a 19-year-old woman was cited for failure to yield at a left turn after her 2022 Honda Civic was struck by a 2007 Dodge Nitro.

The second accident happened a little after 5 p.m. at the intersection of River Road and Ft. Pierce Drive.

Mitchell said that a 19-year-old man driving a 2011 Toyota Tacoma was cited for failure to yield at a left turn after his Tacoma was struck by a 2015 Toyota Camry, driven by a 33-year-old woman.

Responding to both scenes were St. George Police, St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel. Mitchell said that no one was transported to the hospital.

Both scenes were cleared by tow trucks and emergency personnel in less than an hour, restoring traffic to its normal rush hour flow.

Failure to yield at a left turn is a frequent cause of accidents, Mitchell said.

“I would say when making a left turn, everyone should take an extra second and triple check to ensure the road is clear before making the turn,” Mitchell said. “It’s the responsibility of that driver to make sure it’s safe to make that turn.

“Patience and not being distracted while driving is key,” she added.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Ed. Note: A previous version said that the first person cited was a man. St. George News was later informed that this was a woman.
