ST. GEORGE — It’s a family thing for St. George motocross bike rider Sierra Bull.
According to Sierra’s mom Christine, Sierra’s first appearance at a track was when she was three weeks old. She started riding at age 3, so she started a little earlier than her brother and sister.
Motor sports have always been a big part of Bull family life.
“My husband and I just dabbled for fun when we younger,” Christine told St. George News Tuesday afternoon. “But we’re all focused on the kids now, 110 percent.”
Husband Tron Bull is Sierra’s coach and mechanic while 15-year old brother Wyatt and 9-year old sister Dakota cheer her on and also compete on the track.
Sierra, the youngest Bull at 8-years old, is a natural on the bike.
“It really took off for her,” Christine said. “She’s super competitive.”
Christine said Sierra really benefited from growing up in the motor sports community in Southeast Utah, adding that Sierra met with legendary X-Games riders Mike Metzger and Colby Raha.
“Raha started a jump school and Sierra got to go that, and she just got so much more confidence jumping on a bike,” Christine said.
Sierra’s confidence carried her all the way to the Amateurs Motocross AMA National Championship at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch last week in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
In what is considered one of the premier events in the motocross season, featuring the top national and international riders, Sierra placed 29th out of 42 racers in her class.
“She was the only girl and she represented the great city of St. George very professionally and well,” Christine said. “She’s the 29th fastest kid in the nation.”
Loretta Lynn’s Ranch is open to the public once a year, only for this event. For some in the sport it is truly hallowed ground, and there’s a lot at stake in these races.
“They were some rough races,” Christine said. “There were some emotional breakdowns. And when you’re 8, that happens. It was truly such an achievement to get there.”
Sierra hopes to get back to Loretta Lynn’s Ranch next year, but aging up means she’ll also be on a bigger, faster bike. So she’s got a challenge ahead of her.
Just the way she likes it.
