Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Alexander reported that one incident on Aug. 4 took place at around 8:30 a.m. The scene involved a lone motorcyclist traveling northbound on US Highway 89 near mile marker 78. The rider was navigating the highway when the accident occurred.

“He failed to negotiate a curve and struck the guard rail,” Alexander said. “He suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital.”

According to Alexander, no other vehicles were involved in the crash, making it a single-vehicle accident. He further noted that the motorcyclist’s condition is extremely critical, emphasizing the severity of the injuries sustained in the incident. The trooper noted that the rider was not wearing a helmet.

The Utah Department of Transportation reported that both directions of US 89 were closed at milepost 78, located three miles south of Mount Carmel, starting at 9:16 a.m. The closures are expected to remain in effect until approximately 12:15 p.m.

The incident on Sunday follows a multi-vehicle incident that occurred Saturday afternoon around 3:11 p.m. near milepost 65 on U.S. Highway 89.

Alexander reported that the incident involved three southbound vehicles on the highway when a northbound vehicle reportedly drifted into their lane, causing the collision.

“The northbound vehicle drifted into the other lane and struck the first southbound vehicle, then the other two vehicles were scooped up in the mayhem,” he said.

One patient was transported to the hospital. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Troopers are investigating the possibility of drowsy driving as a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
