Made in Southern Utah: Black Desert Resort prepares to welcome the PGA Tour in historic return

SOUTHERN UTAH — Surrounded by towering red cliffs and jet-black lava beds, the breathtaking setting of Black Desert Resort is soon to be Southern Utah’s premier destination for championship golf, world-class hospitality and exhilarating adventure.

This fall, Black Desert Resort will host the triumphant return of the PGA Tour to Utah in spectacular fashion. The inaugural Black Desert Championship, the first tour-level event contested in the Beehive State since 1963, is set for Oct. 9-13, and will be followed by an LPGA tournament next spring.

In this episode of “Made in Southern Utah,” host and managing partner Patrick Manning caught up with Jon Coolbaugh, the resort’s director of championship operations and a key figure behind the scenes of this historic event.

“It’s the state of Utah’s championship. We’re representing Southern Utah and we’re located here in Southern Utah, but we’re Southern Utah’s championship, Northern Utah’s championship and everything in between,” Coolbaugh said. “This championship is really all about a premier experience; a safe, an amazing, a very VIP experience for even the general admission tickets.”

The tournament is still a few months away, but Coolbaugh and his team are already hard at work assembling the grandstands and hospitality tents that will welcome golf fans from around the world. Additionally, Black Desert Resort will rely on more than 1,000 dedicated volunteers to help keep the event running smoothly.

Daily grounds passes start at just $60. Tickets will become available to the public on Wednesday, Aug. 7 and are expected to sell out quickly. However, Southern Utah locals can secure their spot during an exclusive presale on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Click here to register for the pre-sale and buy tickets.
