ST. GEORGE — Smoke from the Brookside Fire burning northeast of Veyo could be seen from state Route 18 on Saturday evening.
The fire was listed at 20.9 acres in size and was about 10 percent contained, according to Washington County Fire Warden Heber Heyder.
“Forward progression has been stopped,” Heyder said. “Crews are working to secure the line, doing some burning operations to help that line.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Heyder said that at one point the fire, which started around 2:00 p.m., threatened five structures.
“Those structures are no longer threatened and no evacuation orders were issued,” Heyder said.
Heyder said several agencies responded to the fire, including units from the Diamond Valley and Dammeron Valley Fire Departments, the Santa Clara-Ivins Fire Department, the Northwest Special Services District, and Enterprise Fire Department along with local and federal crews.
Heyder had no time frame for when full containment might be achieved.
“We’ll probably be here well into the night,” he said.
