ST. GEORGE — One hiker reportedly died from heat exhaustion while hiking in extreme heat on Saturday.
According to a press release by the Santa Clara – Ivins Search and Rescue, first responders were initially dispatched to a call of two hikers in distress.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., responding units from Washington County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Santa Clara – Ivins Police Department and park rangers found two hikers suffering from heat exhaustion.
While still on the scene, a passerby notified authorities of an unconscious 30-year old woman nearby, the media release continued.
“First responders located the individual and it was determined that she was deceased,” Santa Clara – Ivins Search and Rescue said. The investigation is ongoing due to the unusual nature of the incident, officers noted. No further information will be shared at this time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time of loss,” the media release stated, “As temperatures soar, it’s absolutely vital to maintain a regular intake of water, especially when outdoors. Dehydration can lead to serious health issues, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Remember your body may still need water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Watch for signs of dehydration, like dizziness or excessive fatigue. Stay safe and well-hydrated.”
