ST. GEORGE — A “significantly injured” man was transported to the hospital after crashing on an electric motorcycle Sunday evening, police say.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the man was “popping a wheelie” — riding on the back tire — near 426 E. Calgary Dr. and crashed into the back of a red Toyota Tundra, St. George Police Sgt. Bryan Hendrix told St. George News.

The rider was reportedly ejected from the bike, falling into the truck’s bed. The first officer on the scene reported that the man appeared to have fractured both arms and legs, Hendrix said.

Tiffany Mitchell, public information officer for St. George Police, told St. George News that the rider was “significantly injured at the time of the crash,” and there are no updates regarding his condition.

Still, Hendrix said the man was conscious, alert and breathing when he was transported to the hospital in a Gold Cross Ambulance.

The motorcycle reportedly was not street-legal or properly registered and insured, so it was towed from the scene to be impounded. Mitchell confirmed that the bike’s 21-year-old owner, who was not the rider, was cited for these reasons. Additionally, the rider will likely receive a citation for reckless driving.

Hendrix said he’s “seen this one too many times” during his work on the Accident Reconstruction Team.

“Just drive carefully and make sure that any vehicle you’re operating on the road is street legal, properly registered and insured if it needs to be and that you’re wearing a helmet if you’re riding a motorcycle,” he said, adding that while the man’s arms and legs were reportedly broken, it “could have gone a lot worse if he’d hit his head just the wrong way.”

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and St. George Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
