ST. GEORGE — The Kolob Canyons Road officially reopened on Nov. 29, reinforced by eight feet of geo-grid, structural cloth and compacted soil. The project restoration finished well ahead of its initial winter 2024 estimate.
The road was closed back in March as a precaution after rangers noticed a depression on the surface not long after it began to collapse, according to a news release from Zion National Park.
In a joint effort, the National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration undertook the rehabilitation process, addressing issues stemming from a landslide and fortifying the road against future geological challenges.
Additionally, over 6,000 square feet of pavement were repaired, and drainage improvements such as ditches, gutters and curbs were installed to ensure effective water runoff, the news release said.
Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders are now permitted past Taylor Creek Trailhead. The area’s hiking trails are again fully accessible now that construction is completed.
