At approximately 5:09 p.m. MDT, multiple agencies were dispatched to the scene of a crash near Interstate 15’s Exit 27, about 1 mile south of the Utah Port of Entry.

Arizona Highway Patrol Trooper Thomas Callister told St. George News that a man from Salt Lake City was driving north in a black Chevrolet Silverado when he had an undescribed medical event and lost consciousness.

He left the roadway, and the truck rolled, coming to rest on its roof, Callister said. The driver reportedly sustained minor injuries. He was seen walking at the scene and was evaluated by Beaver Dam-Littlefield EMS.

“I always got to say this because it’s true — the thing that really is the difference in a collision like this, compared to some of the other collisions, is he was wearing a seat belt,” Callister said. “It was a pretty violent collision, and he stayed in the car. And so the only injuries he really has is injuries from the seat belt … Violent, but fortunately, he is OK. And cars can be replaced and people cannot.”

Utah Highway Patrol, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the St. George Fire Department also responded to the call.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
