HILDALE — A motorhome caused a bit of commotion on Friday in Hildale after hitting a parked van and rolling over onto its side. The incident was reported on the property of the Border Store near the Utah-Arizona border.
Colorado City – Hildale City Police Department Sgt. David Wilkinson told St. George News by telephone that an older man and his wife from South Carolina were traveling southbound on Highway 59 with their dog, when “dumb luck” caused the RV rollover.
On June 15, the man was driving when he missed the turn-off to the store. He then allegedly traveled into an area that was not big enough for the RV.
Wilkinson said the incident occurred in an area with a steep incline.
“He over-accelerated and ended up hitting the corner of a parked van, drove off the curb, turned, but too far on the shoulder, and overcorrected, laying the vehicle on its side,” Wilkinson said.
The occupants were able to climb out of the vehicle unharmed, he noted. They were examined by emergency responders from the Colorado City Fire Department and denied further medical assistance.
“No impairment, no ill-intent,” Wilkinson said. “Operator error. It is important that if you get yourself in a bad situation slow down and think it through before acting.”
There were no injuries reported and no citations were issued.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
