CEDAR CITY — The Iron County Children’s Justice Center’s annual 5K Fun Run and Walk is being held in a new location this year.

Instead of Cedar City, near the neighborhoods and trails surrounding the current ICCJC facility, this year’s race will be staged at Enoch’s Old Park.

“We’re doing it out in Enoch this year because the fundraiser is specific to raising money for our new facility that will be out in Enoch,” explained Cassie Meredith, organizer of this year’s race. The family-friendly event is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, starting at 8 a.m.

The Iron County Children’s Justice Center is looking to expand from its current facility into a larger, more functional building. Its planned location is near 1600 E. 5250 North, in Enoch, a short distance from Old Enoch Park.

“We’ll have displayed there a rendering of what the new building is proposed to look like,” Meredith said.

This year’s 5-kilometer fun run has a “Star Wars” theme, Meredith said, adding that kids and parents are encouraged to dress up in their favorite Star Wars costumes or clothing.

Medals will be given to the top finishers in the different age categories. People can choose to run, walk, or jog the course, which starts and ends in the park.

In addition to a pancake breakfast donated by Pork Belly’s, participants can also enter a prize drawing to win gift baskets and other merchandise donated by local businesses. Winners must be present at the drawing in order to receive their prizes, Meredith said.

The Iron County Children’s Justice Center is one 25 such facilities statewide, which are administered under the Utah Attorney General’s Office through the various county attorneys’ offices.

The centers primarily serve children under age 18 who are victims of alleged sexual abuse, physical abuse or who are victims or witnesses in cases involving domestic violence, drugs and internet exploitation.
