CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Southern Utah’s largest craft brewery, Silver Reef Brewing Co., was recognized earlier this year at the esteemed 2024 World Beer Cup. Known to many as the Oscars of the industry, the World Beer Cup is the most prestigious beer competition in the world, held annually in conjunction with the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America.
Silver Reef Brewing Co. took home gold for their Mas Fuego in the Smoke Beer category and bronze for their Smokin’ Barrel in the category of Wood-and-Barrel-Aged Beer.
“These awards mean so much to our team,” Silver Reef co-owner Dave Moody said. “We love the work we do and the beers we craft at Silver Reef; getting this acknowledgment from the World Beer Cup is truly an honor.”
Silver Reef’s Mas Fuego is a German Rauchbier – a favorite beer style of the Silver Reef brewers – and one not often found in the United States. Made with 100% Weyemann Malt from Bamberg, Germany, with 70% of the malt bill being beechwood smoked malt, Mas Fuego has a signature barbecue smoke flavor and aroma that adds complexity while still being delicate, smooth and flavorful.
Although traditionally made with higher-alcohol beers, like stouts, Silver Reef’s Smokin’ Barrel wood-and-barrel-aged beer uses a lower-alcohol lager for its unique twist. The Smokin’ Barrel marries the lighter beer with a signature smoky character as well as bourbon and oak, creating a complex, flavorful and award-winning beer.
“Creating these beers has been a labor of love,” said Michael Key, Silver Reef’s director of brewery and distillery operations. “These beers are some of my favorite styles of beers, but we took some chances and crafted them the Silver Reef way. I’m thrilled it paid off, and others love them as much as we do!”
Silver Reef beers are available throughout Utah, Nevada and Arizona, as well as at Silver Reef’s brewery and restaurant, Silver Reef Craft & Kitchen. In addition to all the beers, the restaurant offers a full menu of American classics, specialty cocktails and handcrafted mocktails.
