Harold Vardell Hymas

April 1, 1928-July 16, 2024

Our family patriarch, loving father and grandfather, Harold Vardell Hymas, age  96, passed peacefully at his home on July 16, 2024. Harold was born in Eugene, Oregon, April 1, 1928, to Jesse Reese and Annie Almeda Hymas. He was the oldest of four children; his siblings  Nadine, Jerry and Joyce, all preceded him in death.

Harold (also known as “Johnny” by family and close friends) spent his early years in Idaho. His decision to attend BYU was fortuitous because there he met the love of his life, Marie Cook. They were married Sept. 23, 1947, in the Idaho Falls Temple and spent 73 wonderful years together until her passing on Jan. 27, 2021. He has been looking forward to being with his sweetheart ever since.

Harold made his living in the glass business, but he spent his life in service to God and others. His greatest possessions were his testimony of Jesus Christ and his wife and family. He served as a bishop, in a stake presidency, five full-time missions (Germany, Missouri, Nauvoo,  England and Korea), and was a sealer in the St. George Temple for many years. Harold will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, kindness and wisdom. This Christ-like man will be missed by many, and his influence will live on for generations to come.

Harold is survived by his five children: David (Jan), Dan (Ann), Ed (Debbie), Susan  Madsen (Mike) and Nancy Thomas (Jeff), 33 grandchildren and 95+ great-grandchildren. We, as a family, give our love and thanks to Susan and Mike for their devoted care of our parents in their final years.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 20, at 1 p.m., at the Metcalf Mortuary, 300  W. St George Blvd., St. George, Utah. There will be a visitation prior to the services from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Drive, St. George,  Utah.
