CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Every summer, as temperatures rise in St. George, prices drop during the Red Tag Sales Event at Stephen Wade Auto Center. On top of the sizzling deals that customers have come to expect, Southern Utah’s Auto Mall continues to sweeten the pot by giving away $15,000 in 15 days.

“We have so much to offer customers,” said Jamie Bahlmann, public relations director for Stephen Wade Auto Center. “Along with a shot to win $5,000 every week, everyone really can find the perfect fit for their family on our lots.” 

Just one more reason why “you’ve got it made at Stephen Wade,” Red Tag started as a way of driving traffic to the car lots during the summer, always a slower time for vehicle sales. Here’s a look back at the history of one of Southern Utah’s most enduring promotions. 

2015-2018 

Stephen Wade Auto Center kicked off the inaugural Red Tag Sales Event by marking down every vehicle on every lot, both new and used, and offering free items from participating food trucks to any customer that took a picture with a Red Tag banner or shared the promotion on social media. Red Tag steadily gained momentum as Southern Utahns realized they could score unbeatable savings on new and used cars by braving the heat. 

In 2017, the Stephen Wade family of dealerships partnered with Canyon Media’s radio stations to give away cash. Every day, a red key with a secret code was hidden on the Stephen Wade Auto Center website; customers could then call in to one of the stations and provide the code for a chance to win $100. Additional prize giveaways were offered at WadeRedTag.com the following year. 

2019

Stephen Wade Auto Center took Red Tag to the next level by giving away $15,000 in 15 days. Three different $5,000 winners were selected, with customers earning entries by purchasing a car or calling in to Canyon Media’s radio stations. 2019 also saw the introduction of Red Tag selfie stations around town, making it easier than ever before to enter by sharing a photo on social media. 

“By this year, most of Southern Utah knew that during the month of July, they would receive savings and have the opportunity to win cash and prizes from Stephen Wade,” Bahlmann said. 

2020-2021 

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stephen Wade Auto Center continued to offer Red Tag discounts on all new and used vehicles. The dealership also gave away $1,000 every Saturday in July. 

Supply chain shortages and delays continued to plague the automotive industry in 2021. With less inventory available, Stephen Wade Auto Center took the summer off from Red Tag and instead hosted a buyback event, giving customers unprecedented trade-in values for their vehicles. 

2022

Back by popular demand, Red Tag offered customers unbeatable savings on more than 1,000 used vehicles across the entire Stephen Wade family of dealerships. Along with taking advantage of huge discounts, Southern Utahns were invited to enter weekly sweepstakes for cash and prizes even if they weren’t planning on buying a car. 

Customers could participate by purchasing a car, following a series of clues to find a red key hidden on the Stephen Wade website, visiting any Stephen Wade dealership or Red Tag selfie station to snap and share a photo, or playing along with Canyon Media’s on-air challenges. Stephen Wade Auto Center gave away $1,000 to one lucky winner every Friday in July.

2023

Red Tag returned with a fun new twist. Along with taking advantage of huge savings on used cars, customers had the opportunity to earn weekly chances to take a spin in a cash machine and grab all the greenbacks they could hold. Ultimately, Stephen Wade Auto Center gave away a little over $12,000 in total.

“Each year, we have tried to change up the July Red Tag Sales Event to keep our employees and residents engaged in the promotion and excited about the event,” Bahlmann said.

2024

This year, Stephen Wade Auto Center will be giving away $5,000 cash to one randomly selected winner each week in July. Participants can enter by purchasing a vehicle, test-driving a vehicle or scanning the QR code on the reception desk at any Stephen Wade dealership. You can also listen to the morning shows on any Canyon Media radio station and play along with the hosts to gain an additional entry.

All winners are required to collect their cash or prizes in person at Stephen Wade Auto Center. Participants must at least 18 years old and a resident of Utah, Arizona or Nevada with valid ID. Click here for a complete list of rules and regulations.

“This is one of my favorite promotions that we do,” Bahlmann said. “It’s pretty awesome to hand somebody $5,000 cash.”
