ST. GEORGE — The men’s basketball team at Southern Utah University acquired a veteran point guard as second-year head coach Rob Jeter dipped into the transfer portal.

A press release Tuesday from SUU Intercollegiate Athletics announced that Hercy Miller, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Los Angeles, California, will play in Cedar City this year after spending the last two seasons at the University of Louisville.

Miller played in 27 games for the Cardinals in 2022-23, his best season in Louisville.

He scored a career-high 10 points with two 3-pointers in a game at Pitt, and Miller was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Team.

Miller was one of only two Cardinals on the team to finish the season with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.

A hip injury and surgery cut last season short and Miller played in 10 games for Louisville, starting three of them.

“We are incredibly excited to have Hercy join our program,” Jeter said in the press release. “He brings a lot of high-level experience and knows what it takes to win.”

Jeter praised Miller’s versatility.

“He is a physical guard who will defend multiple positions,” Jeter said. “He is a great addition to a team that already has elevated goals.”

ESPN Rankings listed Miller as a three-star prospect coming out of his senior season at Minnehaha Academy in Minnesota. Miller scored a team-high 24 points in a game playing alongside future Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren.

He led his team to a 20-1 record and their fourth straight 3A Minnesota state championship.

Miller joins an incoming group of T-Birds that includes Kai Burdick, a 7-foot center from MiraCosta (California) Junior College; JT Langston Jr., a 6-foot-8 transfer from Rider University; Xavier Sykes, a 5-foot-10 guard from Columbia, Missouri; and Tavi Jackson, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Colorado State University.

SUU finished the first season under Jeter’s leadership with a 10-21 overall record along with a 5-15 mark in the Western Athletic Conference.
