UPDATED: Hurricane Police lifts shelter-in-place order after armed man surrenders

HURRICANE — Hurricane residents were asked to shelter in place Thursday evening.

According to a press release issued by Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Hurricane City Police Department, at approximately 4:13 p.m. the Consolidated Communication Center received a call about a possible suicidal man in the area in the 3400 block of 290 N. It was reported he was armed and in the street in front of his house. Officers from Hurricane City Police Department and deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area. The subject was located and found to be armed with a rifle and handgun.

At 9:34 p.m., the man was taken into custody and a shelter-in-place order was lifted. He was taken without injury to himself or officers, according to police. The area is still closed to traffic for the investigation, but residents may contact officers for accommodations.

The Hurricane Police Department sent out a reverse 911 call around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, asking residents in the area of 209 North and 3560 West in Hurricane to shelter in place while they worked through the incident.

The Washington City Police Department also responded.
