ST. GEORGE — A teen was transported to the hospital on Tuesday morning after he fell while hiking in Hurricane.
The incident was reported shortly before 9 a.m. at the Three Falls Canyon Trail in Hurricane after a 16-year-old fell while hiking one of the trails.
Fire crews from Hurricane Valley Fire District were dispatched to the area, where they found the teen approximately a quarter of a mile up the trail.
Battalion Chief Tyler Ames with Hurricane Valley Fire District told St. George News the teen was hiking up the rocky trail when he lost his footing and fell approximately 6 feet to the wash below.
The teen was hiking with another individual at the time who witnessed the fall and reportedly called 911 right away.
Ames said firefighters reached the youth within 15 minutes of arriving at the trailhead. He said the teen reported pain in his lower back that prevented him from making it out of the canyon on his own.
After being assessed, the teen was stabilized, loaded into a basket and carried out of the canyon to an awaiting ambulance, which transported him to St. George Regional Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The trail is located off state Route 9 in the Gould Wash area with an elevation of more than 3,200 feet that rises another 250 feet at its highest point. The hike is approximately 2.8 miles long round trip and is considered moderately strenuous with steep slopes and a rocky trail.
Multiple firefighters from Hurricane Valley Fire District, who are specifically trained in technical rescues, including high-angle rope rescue operations, responded to the scene.
