Police: Suspect in Washington City homicide has no remorse after killing parents and shooting at brother

ST. GEORGE — The two victims in a double homicide in Washington City on Tuesday have been identified as the parents of the suspect in the case, according to the police report of the shooting deaths. Authorities say the suspect, 28-year-old Mia Bailey, admitted to killing her parents and attempting to kill her brother and expressed no remorse for doing so.

The parents, Joseph and Gail Bailey, were found dead when Washington City Police responded to reports of shots fired at the home the two shared with one of their sons and his wife, according to the police report.

Bailey surrendered Wednesday morning after an overnight search that stretched throughout the area. She is being held at Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane pending a preliminary hearing.

Bailey is accused of killing her parents at their home on East Chinook Drive in the Washington Fields neighborhood of Washington City on Tuesday evening. She also attempted to shoot her brother, who was living at the house with his wife, the report states.

Bailey had not been living at the home.

In addition to a third-degree felony for discharging a weapon, she now faces 10 first-degree felonies: three counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated burglary, and six counts of felony discharge of a weapon.

Police say Bailey admitted to killing her parents and attempting to kill her brother.

“Mia further stated that she did not have remorse for her actions and that she would not change what she had done,” the police report states. “Mia stated, ‘I would do it again. I hate them.’”

Bailey’s brother, Cory Bailey, sought a protective order against Mia Bailey last July, according to 5th District Court documents. Three other minor children are listed as co-plaintiffs in the order.

Judge John Walton granted a temporary protective order on July 18.

The order came a month after Bailey, who is transitioning from male to female, was granted by the court a legal gender and name change from Collin Bailey.

On Oct. 16, the court said both parties agreed to have the protective order dismissed. Walton granted the dismissal without prejudice, allowing the order to be refiled, if needed, later.

The police report details both what officers found upon their arrival and Bailey’s own description of what she said were her actions.

On Tuesday, Bailey arrived at the residence in her Kia Soul vehicle, and that arrival was seen on a neighbor’s security camera.

Bailey reportedly told police she entered the house and “immediately began shooting at her mother.” Police said they found multiple spent casings from a 9mm handgun in the front room next to the mother, who was lying face down with no signs of life.

Police said Bailey described her father approaching her after he heard the shots. Bailey told police she shot her father in the head, and he “immediately dropped to the ground.”

Bailey said she then went downstairs to the basement of the home, seeking her brother Cory to find a locked door. Bailey said she fired one round in the direction of her brother through the door. Bailey said she then went back upstairs.

She later told police that her brother was not her main target, but “she would not have been sad had the gunshot killed him.”

Police said the brother was not hit, but a bullethole was found in the door.

Cory Bailey told police that he and his wife had locked the door after hearing the gunshots and commotion upstairs. They then fled out a downstairs window to a neighbor’s house.

After she went upstairs, Mia Bailey reportedly told police, she saw her father lying on the ground and shot him one more time in the head to “make sure he was dead.” She said she then heard her mother making noises and shot her one more time in the head.

A preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
