ST. GEORGE— The St. George Fire Department and community members brought a brush fire under control Thursday evening with the help of a rocky outcrop.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m., the department was dispatched to 4140 E. El Capitan Way and reached the scene in less than 15 minutes. After fire crews arrived, Battalion Chief Tyler Talbot said several residents from a neighborhood also arrived to assist.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Talbot said there were reports of several juveniles running from the scene.
Firefighters approached the flames from various flanks to stop its progression, and it slowed naturally once it hit the rocky top of the brush-covered hillside. The fire sizzled out at just under an acre.
When St. George News arrived, Talbot said crews were in the midst of their mop-up operation, which was estimated to take about another hour.
“They’re just going through, making sure there’s no hot spots or smoke or lingering embers that could cause a problem later on,” he said. “So, these guys are just going area by area and doing a really, really detailed check.”
No injuries were reported. Talbot said he didn’t expect any but was keeping his “fingers crossed” that none would occur later due to the rugged terrain.
Because the wind was pushing the fire toward the hillside and away from nearby homes, there was also no reported property damage.
Talbot reminds Southern Utahns to be careful with fire due to increased winds and dry conditions.
“As we’re heading into the Fourth of July season, we want people to be cautious of the dry vegetation and using fireworks here in the near future,” he added.
