Aug. 31, 1958-May 12, 2024

Ramón Rivera Álvarez, 65 years old, died on May 12, 2024. He was born on Aug. 31, 1958, in Las Canoas Nayarit, Mexico, to José Rivera and Hipólita Álvarez and was the seventh of 14 children. He married María De Jesús Ramírez on Dec. 26, 1980, in El Rosario Nayarit, Mexico.

While growing up in Las Canas, he was known for being a troublemaker at school. When he got in trouble, the teacher would send notes home with his sister to give to his mother and he would steal them so she wouldn’t find out. When he received his primary school certificate, he said that a “cow ate it.” Still to this day, we don’t know if the certificate was ever found.

When he was 21 years old and visiting his aunt in El Rosario, Nayarit, he met María, who was 16 years old at the time, at a local hangout, and they married a year later. They lived in El Rosario for three years and then moved to Mexicali, Mexico, and started a family. After 11 years in Mexico, they both decided that their family needed a better life. Ramón left his family and moved to Utah, and within a month, in the summer of 1994, his family joined him in St. George. He immediately found work doing landscaping maintenance and eventually landed a job in St. George city, working in the parks and maintenance department.

He loved the outdoors; it didn’t matter if he was fishing, hunting or camping, as long as he was with his family and in nature, he was happy. He loved taking care of animals, especially his chickens, dogs and his horse Sandungo. Whenever they could, Ramon and María traveled back to El Rosario, Nayarit, and enjoyed spending time in the house they built together there.

In 2021 he began to have health problems and within a few months, he ended up with kidney disease. In 2022, he started dialysis and patiently waited for the day a compatible kidney would be found, but that day never came. Even on his bad days, you would find him outside in the garden or spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Not a day went by when he wasn’t with his family, even in his last hours he was surrounded by them.

 He is survived by his wife of 44 years María De Jesús (Ramírez); children Yessenia Rivera (Isrrobel Núñez), Ramón Rivera Jr. (Crisann), José Rivera (Jenny) and Adán Rivera; grandchildren Jennifer (Robert), Michael, Alexander, Dominick, Reagan, Ryder, Ethan, Mia, Emilee; great-grandchildren Alani and Brexley. He is also survived by 12 siblings and their spouses.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ethan (grandson) and Ramón Montalvo (brother).

A viewing will be held on Friday, May 17, from 6-8 pm at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, Utah. Mass will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at St George Catholic Church, 259 W. 200 N. St. George. Immediately following mass, there will be a graveside service at the Washington City Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.

We extend our love and gratitude to Dr. Mercado, Dr. León, his nurse Marcos and the entire wonderful staff at Liberty Dialysis St. George for the incredible care he received while on dialysis. We also want to thank all the doctors and nurses who cared for him during his final days in the ICU at Intermountain Healthcare.

Ramón Rivera Álvarez, de 65 años, falleció el 12 de mayo de 2024. Nació el 31 de Agosto de 1958, en Las Canoas Nayarit, México, de José Rivera e Hipólita Álvarez y fue el séptimo de 14 hijos. Se caso con María De Jesús Ramírez el 26 de diciembre de 1980 en El Rosario Nayarit, México. 

Mientras crecía en Las Canas, era conocido por ser travieso en la escuela. Siempre se metía en problemas por lo que la maestra enviaba notas a casa con su hermana para dárselas a su madre y él las robaba para que ella no se enterara. Al recibir su certificado de primaria en un descuido el dijo que una vaca se lo comió. 

Cuando tenía 21 años y visitaba a su tía en El Rosario, Nayarit, conoció a María, que en ese momento tenía 16 años, en un lugar de reunión local, y se casaron un año después.Vivieron en el Rosario por 3 años y luego se mudaron a Mexicali, México y formaron su familia. 11 años después, ambos decidieron que su familia necesitaba una vida mejor, por lo que Ramón dejó a su familia y se mudó a Utah. Al mes mando por su familia para reunirse con él en St. George, Utah, en el verano de 1994. Inmediatamente encontró trabajo haciendo mantenimiento de jardines y finalmente consiguió un trabajo en St. George City, trabajando en el departamento de parques y mantenimiento. 

Le encantaba el aire libre. No importaba si estaba pescando, cazando o acampando, siempre y cuando estuviera con su familia y en la naturaleza, era feliz. Le encantaba cuidar a los animales, especialmente a sus gallinas, perros y su caballo Sandungo. Cada vez que podían, él y María viajaban de regreso a El Rosario, Nayarit y disfrutaban pasar tiempo en la casa que construyeron juntos. 

En 2021 comenzó a tener problemas de salud y en pocos meses terminó con una enfermedad renal. En 2022, comenzó con diálisis y esperando pacientemente hasta encontrar un riñón compatible. Incluso en sus días malos, lo encontrabas afuera en el jardín o pasando tiempo con sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos. No pasaba un día en el que no estuviera con su familia, incluso en sus últimas horas estuvo rodeado de su familia. 

Le sobreviven su esposa durante 44 años María De Jesús (Ramírez); Yessenia Rivera (Isrrobel Núñez), Ramón Rivera Jr (Crisann), José Rivera (Jenny) y Adán Rivera; nietos, Jennifer (Robert), Michael, Alexander, Dominick, Raegan, Ryder, Ethan, Mia, Emilee; bisnietos, Alani y Brexley. También le sobreviven 12 hermanos y sus cónyuges. 

Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Ethan (nieto) y Ramón Montalvo (hermano). 

Se llevará a cabo una misa en su honor el sábado 18 de mayo de 2024 a la 11 a. m. en la Iglesia Católica St George, 259 W. 200 N. St. George, UT 84770. Se llevará a cabo su velorio en la noche anterior. , 17 de mayo, de 6 a 8 p. m. en Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT 84770.
