The incident, which reportedly occurred shortly before 8 p.m., involved a silver Acura passenger car and a dark gray Ford Explorer.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow said the driver of the Acura was heading north on Main Street when he drifted into the southbound lanes and struck the Ford head-on.

Ludlow said officers were looking at whether a medical condition may have been a contributing factor.

“His friend said he has a history of seizures,” Ludlow said of the Acura driver, adding that investigators have not been determine if that’s what led to the crash.

The man who was driving the Acura was cited for failure to maintain a lane of travel, Ludlow added.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance crew to Cedar City Hospital  for evaluation; their injuries were not thought to be serious.

Both cars sustained extensive front-end damage and were later towed from the scene. The impact caused multiple airbags to deploy in both vehicles.

Traffic on southbound Main Street was impacted for more than 30 minutes while the scene was cleared, with the southbound lanes being redirected to a short detour.

In addition to multiple Cedar City Police officers and Cedar City Fire Department personnel, a Southern Utah University Police officer also responded to the incident.

Cedar City also saw an unrelated collision approximately three hours earlier that same evening, when police and other responders were dispatched to the intersection of Cove Drive and state Route 56.

In that incident, Ludlow said the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck ran a red light and struck a Dodge Journey sport utility vehicle in the intersection.

Ludlow said both of the occupants of the SUV sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Meanwhile, neither the driver nor the passenger in the Chevrolet reported any injuries, Ludlow said, adding that the Chevrolet driver was cited for failing to obey a traffic signal.

This report is based on preliminary  information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
