ST. GEORGE — The Gaucho Derby is a 500-kilometer horse race through some of the most rugged mountain terrain in the world, and it was conquered by a St. George local.

Scott Nielsen, a project manager at Black Desert Resort, competed in the 2023 event in nine days to finish the endurance race, a test of skill and spirit for both man and beast.

“Participating in the Gaucho Derby has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and perseverance. It was about pushing my limits and embracing the spirit of adventure that defines such extreme challenges,” Nielsen said in a press release.

The derby is run in southern Argentina, near the Andes Mountains. Riders tackle unmarked paths and daunting scenery.

Competitors face the elements with minimal gear, adhering to strict weight limits and changing horses at every designated checkpoint.

Each racer uses several local Gaucho horses throughout the event, requiring adaptability and proficient riding skills.

“The connections I made, with both the landscape and my fellow competitors from around the globe, have left a lasting mark on me,” Nielsen said.

Nielsen prepared for the race for over 18 months. He underwent intense physical training, including weight loss to meet the strict rider weight requirements.

Riding alone for most of the race, Nielsen navigated through bogs and dense forests, where strategic decision-making was vital.

Eventually, he partnered up with riders from France and Switzerland on the way to the finish line.

Forty racers from around the world contested the derby and 25 of them finished the race.

“The race was more than a test of endurance,” Nielsen said. “It was a lesson in the strength of the human spirit and the bonds we made when faced with the beauty and challenge of nature.”
