ST. GEORGE — The lacrosse team from Dixie High School just missed a shutout in their opening-round playoff game Tuesday night at Walt Brooks Field.
But the Flyers were plenty happy with a 13-1 victory over Desert Hills, even if it wasn’t perfect.
“Defense played really well in front of me. I could see the shots coming at me,” Dixie senior goalie Ben Hunt told St. George News. “And we scored a lot.”
Hunt made 10 saves in the win. Dixie’s dynamic duo of Isaiah Bybee and Porter Alleman led the Flyers offense. Each of the seniors scored five goals and dispensed one assist.
Scoring solo markers for the winners were Frank Platas, Wyatt Bull and Luke Alfano.
Cooper Holm led Dixie with two assists while four other Flyers — Carson Scholes, Drew Harper, Platas and Alfano.
Hunt is a mountain of a goalie and covers much of the cage just by standing in front of it. He said he was recruited by Alleman during an anatomy class.
“He’s like, come play, all we need is a goalie and we’ll win the chip like last year,” Hunt said. “I’ve only been playing for two years but I feel like a veteran.”
The semifinal round in the Southern Utah Lacrosse League playoffs is now set as No. 3 Dixie will play the No. 2 Reds in Cedar City and unbeaten No. 1 Snow Canyon will host No. 4 Canyon View.
Both games faceoff at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The winners of those contests will vie for the championship.
Dixie and Cedar split their regular season series with both home teams winning. Both games were decided by two goals.
Snow Canyon went 12-0 and won the SULL regular season title. The Warriors beat Canyon View twice this season by a combined score of 37-8.
If they beat the Falcons a third time Thursday night, Snow Canyon will play for the league championship at home Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
The SULL will likely cease to exist at the high school level next year as boys lacrosse becomes an official varsity sport under the umbrella of the Utah High School Activities Association.
At that time the SULL teams will most likely be grouped into 4A Region 9 or 10.
