Region 9 boys volleyball: Halfway into regular season, Pine View still undefeated in region play

ST. GEORGE — Halfway into the boys volleyball season, the Pine View Panthers and the Crimson Cliffs Mustangs occupy the top two spots in the Region 9 standings.

The Panthers (6-0, 16-4 overall) are undefeated in region play thus far, having beaten each of the other six teams once. Meanwhile, Crimson Cliffs is currently 4-1 and 11-8. Crimson Cliffs and Desert Hills haven’t played each other yet; the Mustangs will host the Thunder on Wednesday (April 10) to account for the sixth contest that wraps up the first half of the season.

In a closely-fought showdown at Pine View on March 28, the Panthers edged past Crimson Cliffs, 3-2.

The first set was the closest, with Pine View winning 25-23. The Mustangs then captured the second set, 25-19, after which Pine View rebounded to take the third, 25-14. Crimson then tied up the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set, setting up a deciding fifth set, which Pine View won 15-11.

Leading the way for Pine View was junior Nathan Mitchell with 15 kills, while seniors Kody Campbell and Trevor Condie had 10 kills apiece. Campbell and Brock Swensen each recorded 16 digs, while senior setter Spencer Blackmore recorded 48 assists.

Crimson was led by sophomore Cohen Romney’s 15 kills and 16 digs.

In the most recent slate of Region 9 matches on Friday, April 5, Pine View swept Desert Hills 3-0, Crimson Cliffs won at Snow Canyon, 3-1, and Cedar defeated Dixie, 3-1.

In the Cedar City match, the Reds dropped the second set to the Flyers, 23-25, only to come back and win the next two by the same 25-21 score. Luke Munson led the Reds with 12 kills. He also had two digs, two aces and three blocks.

Cedar is next scheduled to host Desert Hills on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Also that evening, Dixie will host Snow Canyon and Hurricane will host Pine View, while Crimson Cliffs has a bye.
