Mignon Elaine Smyth passed away on Feb. 15, 2024, in St. George, Utah, at age 80. She was a Christ-like example of charity, kindness and peacemaking; everyone who knew her will miss her deeply.
Mignon was born Nov. 12, 1943, in Boston, Massachusetts, to William James McCracken and Margaret Elaine Russell. Her father’s military career enabled her to grow up in Boston, New York, Utah, Okinawa and California. She attended BYU, graduating with her bachelor’s degree in 1971. There, she met her husband and eternal companion James Richard Smyth II. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Dec. 3, 1971. Together, they raised six children, living in Salt Lake City, Teton/Sugar City, Idaho, and St. George, Utah. She and her husband served two missions for their church together: the Florida Tallahassee Mission and the Utah Salt Lake City Headquarters Mission.
Nothing brought her greater joy than family. She filled her life loving, supporting and caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, parents, siblings and ancestors. She loved to learn continually, no matter how out of reach a new skill seemed. She was a disciple of Jesus Christ and worked daily to be more like her Savior. She loved the scriptures and serving in the temple and at church. She left a legacy of faithfulness, selflessness and resilience.
She is survived by her husband James; her children Richard, Deborah, Jenni (Jeremy) Taysom, Spencer (Sarah), Susan (Justin) Martin and Michael (Jen); her 21 grandchildren; and her siblings Betty, Bill and John. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Len.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, Feb. 22, at noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse at 1483 W. Angel Arch Dr. St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held from 10:15-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Tonaquint Cemetery, under the direction of McMillan Mortuary, (435-688-8880).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humanitarian Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
