ST. GEORGE — A man had to be airlifted off of Sand Mountain Friday afternoon after his Jeep tipped over.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the west rim of the Sand Mountain OHV area.

Authorities said the man, whose vehicle was among a group of 31 Jeeps traversing a designated off-road route, sustained some injuries to his left side but was airlifted off the mountain for precautionary reasons and concerns about possible neck injuries.

The group of Jeeps was in the area exactly one week before the annual Winter 4×4 Jamboree in the same area.

“It’s a Jeep route that’s pretty common,” Deputy Jacob Paul with the Washington County Search and Rescue team said. “It just rolled over on his side.”

Search and rescue teams ended up not being needed as Intermountain Lifeflight did all the work in the area with precarious cliffs that are hard to reach on foot.

“Lifeflight got there before we could,” Paul said. “It’s a pretty difficult place to get to. You have to do rock climbing.”

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
