ST. GEORGE — A three-vehicle collision on River Road backed up traffic for about 45 minutes after a driver ran a red light, police said.
St. George Police officers and other emergency personnel responded to the intersection of River Road and George Washington Boulevard (1450 South) around 5:40 p.m. following a report of a crash.
When they arrived, they found a Chevrolet Malibu with front-end damage in the intersection and a Toyota passenger car with passenger-side damage on the northeast corner of the intersection by the Maverik gas station. The third vehicle involved appeared to have been able to make it off the roadway and into the gas station parking lot.
With the two cars still in the intersection primarily impacting north and westbound traffic, police officers rerouted the traffic from River Road onto George Washington Boulevard and then through the Maverik parking lot.
From there northbound drivers were able to continue onto River Road. This caused the traffic to back up on the south and east sides of the intersection until the scene was cleared by 6:25 p.m.
As for the cause of the crash, St. George Police Officer Randall Burtis told St. George News that the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu had entered the intersection during a red light and stuck the Toyota, which in turn struck the third vehicle.
One person was taken to St. George Regional Hospital by ambulance for medical care, though Burtis said he did not know the extent of the person’s injuries.
The driver of the Malibu was cited for failing to yield to a traffic device, Burtis said.
