First responders’ vehicles lined the narrow street in the hills above Kanarraville as smoke billowed skyward from the ruins of the burned garage at 6391 Bareback Road. Flames flickered among the debris as fire crews worked.

The fire was reported around 11 a.m., with crews from Cedar City and Kanarraville working at least into the afternoon.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Office told Cedar City News that it appeared no one was in the structure when it caught fire. Still, a Gold Cross ambulance was dispatched to remain on standby in case the property’s owners or responders were injured.

Barney Bros. Electric shut down the power to the garage. Dominion Energy was also at the scene.

The sheriff’s office was asked to block the road to prevent curious onlookers from getting too close to the work, as the fire could be seen from Interstate 15.

The Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office was reportedly en route to assist.

Cedar City Fire Chief Mike Phillips said the fire’s cause was under investigation, later adding that the fire appeared to be accidental.

“We’re still digging into the base cause of it, but there’s no suspicion of any foul play,” he said.

This is a developing story.
