The season officially kicked off with the Greg Fernley Invitational on Nov. 3-4 at Sand Hollow Aquatic Center in St. George.

The meet was dominated by a handful of teams from the northern part of the state, including 6A schools Lone Peak, Skyridge, American Fork and Lehi. The top team finishers from Southern Utah were the Crimson Cliffs boys, who placed fourth overall, and the Desert Hills girls, who took eighth.

Additionally, two swimmers from Southern Utah won both of their individual events at Fernley. Dixie High School senior Andrew Carlile won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.36 seconds and the 100-yard backstroke in 51.65 seconds, while Canyon View junior Kurt Morgan won the 200 free in 1:44.32 and the 100 fly in 51.93.

The following weekend, Cedar High hosted the Cedar November Invitational at the Cedar City Aquatics Center. Pleasant Grove, yet another 6A school from Utah County’s powerful Region 3, captured the top female and male team scores in convincing fashion. Host team Cedar High placed third in both gender divisions, while crosstown rival Canyon View placed second in the boys meet and fourth in the girls.

Individual highlights included Cedar’s Addison Taylor winning the 200 free in 2:03.87 and placing second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:04.45. Taylor’s teammate Olivia Price finished second in both the 200 free and the 100 back.
