CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — As Southern Utah’s population continues to expand, so will the need for access to high-quality medical care around the clock. After years of planning and construction, the time has come to open the doors of the Intermountain Health Hurricane Emergency campus.

Intermountain Health will commemorate the new campus, a service of Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital, with an open house carnival on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Along with tours of the facility, guests can enjoy family-friendly games, prizes, treats, bounce houses and an obstacle course.

“We’re excited to be in Hurricane and to bring emergency department care to the community,” said Jared Stevens, clinical operations director for the emergency, trauma and pediatric departments at St. George Regional Hospital. “They’ll be able to get high-quality care closer to home.”

The Hurricane Valley is among the fastest-growing communities in Southern Utah, yet the nearest facility offering 24/7 medical care is located in St. George. During an emergency situation, the difference between five minutes and 20 minutes in the back of an ambulance could mean the difference between life and death.

Hurricane Emergency will serve residents of Hurricane as well as surrounding communities like La Verkin, Toquerville, Leeds, Virgin, Springdale and Hildale, plus tourists to the Zion Canyon corridor. Its location along state Route 9 provides convenient access for both locals and visitors.

Hurricane Emergency is situated on the 28-acre site that already includes the Intermountain Hurricane Valley InstaCare and Clinic, built over 15 years ago. The facility is licensed as a satellite of St. George Regional Hospital, a level II trauma center, and will be staffed with the same board-certified emergency medicine physicians and nurses.

“Our St. George emergency department is so very busy,” Stevens said. “We see about 180 patients a day, so we’re looking forward to having additional beds and decreased waiting times.”

The Hurricane Emergency campus has 10 beds, and Intermountain Health anticipates a daily patient volume of roughly 30 emergency room visits. About 90% of those patients will be treated and discharged the same day, while patients requiring additional care will be transferred to St. George Regional Hospital.

Along with the emergency department, the campus features a full-service laboratory and outpatient imaging center where Hurricane Valley residents can obtain X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans and more without needing to drive to St. George. Additional services may be added as needed to accommodate the area’s continued growth.

“The mayor and City Council in Hurricane have been requesting this for a long time,” Stevens said. “As Intermountain looked at the future growth and the need, we felt it was smart to put a satellite emergency department there.”

Intermountain Health Hurricane Emergency is located at 75 N. 2260 West in Hurricane. For more information, please call 435-251-2159
