CEDAR CITY — A man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend multiple times last year has died of cancer.

William McAmos Means, 29, died last Friday, Oct. 13, while in custody at Cedar City Hospital due to complications stemming from colon cancer, according to a statement issued by the Iron County Attorney’s Office.

As previously reported, Means was arrested Nov. 25, 2022, following a domestic incident at a Cedar City residence, during which a woman was reportedly stabbed with a pocketknife at least 16 times.

Means, who was identified as the injured woman’s ex-boyfriend, was subsequently charged with one count of attempted murder, a first-degree felony, and one count of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

Prosecutor Trajan Evans, who is also Iron County’s public information officer, told Cedar City News that Means was a parolee from Texas who relocated to Utah after being granted a medical release in 2021 from a Texas correctional facility, due to his cancer.

“Means was provided professional medical care during the entirety of his incarceration at the Iron County Correctional Facility,” Evans said.

Upon Means’ death, Iron County Attorney’s Office filed a motion to dismiss his criminal charges.

“Our office sends our condolences to Means’ family,” Evans said, adding, “The Iron County Attorney’s Office also extends our sympathy to the victim in this case as she continues to heal from her injuries caused by Means.”

Funeral services for Means are scheduled to take place Friday afternoon at the Serenity Funeral Home in Las Vegas, on what would have been his 30th birthday.
