Alan R. Nelson, age 91, died peacefully at his home in Saint George, Utah, on Oct. 13, 2023. Alan was born on Jan. 24, 1932, in Freedom, Wyoming, to Reed and Annie VaLois Robinson-Nelson.
He married Maria (Mary) Chaparro on June 8, 1957, in Tucson, Arizona. They had three daughters.
He served in the Korean War and later moved to Layton, Utah, where he and Mary raised their children and worked at Hill AFB as a safety and quality inspector. He retired after 25 years of service and moved to Kanab, Utah, and bought and operated several motels and storage units. He later retired to St. George, Utah.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. He also liked classic cars and motorcycle riding.
Alan is survived by his significant other (Wendy Sorensen), his two daughters Jody (Glen) Hill, Tularosa, New Mexico, Judy (Timothy) Legel, Spearfish, South Dakota., one grandson Tyler (Kelle) Strand, Kaysville, Utah, and sister Jennie (Brent) McQueen, Twin Falls, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Val (Helen) Nelson and Charles (Willi) Nelson and one daughter, Trina Nelson-Strand.
“I am home in heaven, dear ones. All so happy, all is so bright. There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light. All the pain and grief are over. Every restless tossing passed. I am now at peace forever. Faithfully home in heaven at last.”
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. at the Washington City Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded.
