CEDAR CITY — The top-seeded Canyon View High School girls soccer team defeated Judge Memorial 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, thereby advancing to the state 3A semifinals.

The lone goal of the game came early in the first half, when Canyon View junior Hadlee Farrow drilled a corner kick from the left side that deflected off a Bulldog defender and went into the net.

Canyon View’s defense, led by a stellar effort by goalkeeper Gracie Burt, was able to prevent ninth-seeded Judge Memorial from scoring. It marked the 11th shutout of the season for the Falcons, who improved to 17-2 overall.

“Judge was a tough team. They have a lot of good players,” said Canyon View head coach Steven Newman, who added, “We won because we played as a team. Everyone contributed to the win. When we play as a team, we are good. When we are not playing as a team, we can lose.”

Canyon View played most of the game without star forward Bethanee Vargas, who went out with an ankle injury sustained while she was attempting a closely contested shot on goal that hit the right post.

Newman said he isn’t sure whether Vargas will be able to play in Thursday’s semifinal matchup against No. 4 seed Morgan. Vargas, a sophomore, leads the team with 27 goals scored in 19 games this season.

“It is up in the air,” Newman said. “We will be preparing to play without her.”

Predicted Newman: “Morgan is going to be tough. It will be a really close game.”

Saturday’s tight win came just three days after Canyon View cruised past South Summit 9-0 in a second-round contest. The Falcons amassed seven goals in the first half, then added two more in the first 10 minutes of the second half, at which point the game ended early due to the mercy rule.

Canyon View’s upcoming semifinal game against Morgan is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. That game will be immediately followed by the other 3A semifinal, with No. 2 Ogden taking on No. 6 Juan Diego on that same pitch at 5:30 p.m.

The winners of the two semifinal contests will then play each other in the 3A championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at America First Field (formerly Rio Tinto Stadium) in Sandy.
