ST. GEORGE — The filled stands of the Dixie Sun Bowl saw a record-breaking night last Saturday as the bull-riding arena record fell to a thrilling ride that netted 93 points and the champion title for the St. George Lions Club Dixie Round-Up Rodeo.

Ky John Hamilton stayed atop Angel’s Landing for eight seconds as the crowd cheered him. The night had been rough for bull riders as “no scores” echoed the event’s microphone. Local favorite and world champion, Stetson Wright, did not complete his ride.

Hamilton, originally from Australia, is currently No. 2 in the world and looking to head to the National Finals Rodeo with a chance to win the world title. He currently calls Beaver his hometown.

Hamilton had barely gotten off a flight from Pendleton, Oregon, where he took second in the Pendleton Round-up earlier in the day with a ride of 87.5 points in the championship round.

He claimed $4,483.80 for the night.

The other fan favorite for the night was a young cowgirl who herself rode into the record books with a score of 89 in the mutton-busting event. Young Juniper Dalley rode from one end of the arena to the other to hang on and claim the trophy as the champion while high-fiving the professional cowboys and cowgirls.

The Saddle Bronc saw first and second place go to local favorites Statler and Stetson Wright. Statler scored an 89 riding Jitter Bug while Stetson was right behind him with a 88.5 score atop Vain Reflections. Stetson Wright sits at No. 1 in the world for saddle bronc.

A few local Southern Utah and nearby Southern Nevada rodeo athletes finished well.

In the Team Roping event, Cedar City’s Casey Thomas and Annabella’s Taylor Winn took fifth place with a time of 5.1 seconds. Right behind them was the team of Randon Adams and Jory Levy of Logandale, Nevada, who recorded a time of 5.2 seconds.
