ST. GEORGE — As difficult as it is to live with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, it can be just as difficult to be a family member or friend to loved one suffering from it. For many, they can feel powerless.

A local nonprofit that provides support and education for those afflicted with dementia and their families will be holding an educational series in both St. George and Cedar City over eight weekly sessions designed to empower caregivers and those they care about.

Memory Matters is holding the “Empowering Understanding and Navigating the Compassionate Path of Dementia Care — Early-Stage Memory Loss Series” starting Sept. 21 in St. George and Sept. 26 in Cedar City.

There is no cost for the session for those who feel they can’t pay, but a one-time $40 donation will be used to offset the costs of holding the series for those who fan afford to donate.

LuAnn Lundquist, Memory Matters’ founder and director, said one feeling that both dementia patients and their caregivers won’t experience after attending the series is powerless.

“Our clients walk away feeling better prepared and empowered to face the future,” she said.

The series will feature professional speakers specializing in medicine, psychology, social work and financial/legal fields to advise and equip caregivers with tools to navigate what could be a trying time in their lives, Lundquist said.

The St. George series will be held on Thursdays starting Sept. 21 at the St. George Library, 800 W. 100 South, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for 8 consecutive weeks.

In Cedar City, the Cedar City Library at 303 N. 100 East will be the site of 8 Tuesday sessions, also held weekly, beginning Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to noon.

A pre-registration is required by going to visiting the Memory Matters website, emailing Janet Labrum or calling 435-319-0407.
