CEDAR CITY — Police arrested two suspects Thursday morning following a fight that reportedly happened the night before in a Cedar City residential neighborhood.

Shortly before midnight Wednesday, police were called to an address on Brook Street on a report of a stabbing.

“Cedar City Police Department received a report of a fight that occurred in the 1000 W. block of Brook Street and that someone was lying in the street,” states a news release issued at 9:30 a.m. Thursday by the Police Department.

“While officers were en route, another call was received from the Cedar City Hospital in reference to two male victims with stab injuries,” the release states, adding that ultimately, the two men were airlifted to St. George Regional Hospital.

According to the release, as officers arrived on scene, they observed a vehicle leaving the area.

“Further investigation into the vehicle led investigators to the location of a suspect,” the release states.

Thursday morning, Iron County Metro SWAT Team served a search warrant at an address several blocks to the south, within a mobile home park located at 1225 W. Harding Ave.

Two suspects, a man and a woman, have been taken into custody, according to police.

“The motive behind the assault is still under investigation, and investigators are actively working to gather additional information to piece together the events leading up to this incident,” the news release states, adding that the Police Department does not believe there is any current threat to the community.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was dispatched and was seen flying overhead during the operation Thursday morning.

As the arrest location is near the Southern Utah University campus, SUU sent a message via its campus-wide alert system at 7:48 a.m. that read as follows: “Local law enforcement apprehended a suspect this morning in relation to an assault nearby. There is no risk to members of the campus community.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow said the wounded men were both in their late 20s or early 30s. Ludlow said he wasn’t sure of the severity of their injuries.

This report is based on statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
