Police allege drunk driver caused Cedar City incident involving 3 vehicles

CEDAR CITY — A woman alleged to be weaving through traffic crossed over the center median on South Main Street and hit another vehicle head-on.

Although no serious injuries were reported by passengers in either vehicle, Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow issued a sobering reminder that failure to adhere to laws that prevent the consumption of alcohol while driving can cost drivers more than a monetary fine.

Just before noon Friday, emergency dispatchers received a call regarding a full-size Ford F-150 truck traveling north on Main Street that was “weaving in-and-out of traffic.”

Not long after, a collision in front of the pawn shop located at 1014 S. Main St. was reported.

“Callers were reporting she was swerving a lot,” Ludlow said. “The pickup crossed into the southbound lanes and struck another vehicle, traveling southbound, head-on.”

After striking a white 4-door sedan, which spun the vehicle 180 degrees so it came to rest facing northbound in the southbound lane, the F-150 stopped adjacent to an automobile for sale in the parking lot at World Class Pawn & Jewelry.

“I heard a loud boom, so I ran outside and pried her door (F-150) open and waited for the police to arrive,” employee A.J. Kleinman said of his experience while working at the gun counter. “Not too scary, I was just helping. Just concerned.”

Both occupants of the sedan traveling in the correct lane were treated by medical staff on scene and reported as “doing OK,” Ludlow added. While not present at the scene, he told Cedar City News he believed there were only two occupants in the white sedan.

The female driver of the Ford F-150 truck, the lone occupant, was transported to the Cedar City Hospital for treatment of head wounds but was expected to be released. Based on the evidence allegedly gathered at the scene, police officers will be present when the patient is released from the hospital.

“She will be transported to jail and booked for driving under the influence,” Ludlow stated. “This is probably a good time to remind people that the holidays are coming up. And that drinking and driving is never a good idea.”

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
