ST. GEORGE — We’re back to highlighting exceptional student-athletes throughout Southern Utah with all new episodes of “Performance Player of the Month,” brought to you by Ken Garff St. George Ford.

This month’s episode features Pine View High School football star Quincy Jones. Devin Dixon with The Fan Sports Network and St. George News Sports joined him on home field to catch up.

Jones plays two positions for the Panthers: running back and wide receiver. He likes to watch NFL highlights to help prepare for games, and his favorite player is Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings.

Jones learned the sport at an early age from his dad, who played at Southern Utah University and was later drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. They especially focus on the mental side of football, including meditating and using visualization before every game.

Off the field, his greatest role model is his mom, who has motivated him to keep his grades up. In fact, the accomplishment he’s most proud of during his high school career is making the honor roll every year.

“She’s the greatest example of working hard. She sacrifices a lot for me,” Jones said. “I’m just so grateful for her.”

Jones, a senior, is setting some goals for his last season with the Panthers. He wants to rush at least 120 yards on offense every game, catch as many balls as he can and be a good leader for his teammates, which include his brother.

As far as advice he’d give to younger players, Jones said it’s essential to find a reason why they love football. If kids lose their love for the sport, they can burnout or quit.

“I just feel like when I’m on the field, nothing else matters,” he added. “My mind’s clear.”
