ST. GEORGE — On the day that marks the 107th birthday of the National Park Service, one official lauded the preservation over 400 national recreation areas, parks and monuments.

Among them is Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, home to Lake Powell and what an NPS press release describes as “a world-class water sports destination, with fluctuating water levels offering a new experience on every trip.”

The good news-bad news message includes vital data about Lake Powell, where, according to the news release, “the lake level is 3575.4 feet above sea level and is slowly declining.”

Boaters are reminded that “once the level drops below 3,574 feet …, Bullfrog Main Ramp is expected to become inoperable to vessels of any size. The nearby Bullfrog Main Ramp Spur is projected to remain operable for small vessels (up to 25 feet) to elevation 3,540 feet ASL … Around Labor Day, larger vessels will need to shift to the Bullfrog North Ramp.”

Recreation area Superintendent Michelle Kerns said Labor Day is a good time to recognize all NPS employees but also emphasized the important role employees play at Glen Canyon.

“All are dedicated public servants who care for these public lands and the people who visit each year,” Kearns said. “I also want to recognize our concession employees working in Glen Canyon NRA who provide services to our visitors day in and day out. We are grateful for our partners, concessioners, commercial use operators, and local communities. This area’s people and local businesses make this a special place to live and explore.”

The Labor Day holiday weekend offers a diversity of land- and water-based recreational opportunities at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area … easy front country hiking at the iconic Horseshoe Bend Overlook,or wilderness escapades in the backcountry, the news release said.
