ST. GEORGE — Although school hasn’t officially started yet, the Region 9 boys golf season got underway Thursday afternoon at Coral Canyon Golf Course in Washington City.

The Desert Hills Thunder powered their way to a first-place finish, with their top four golfers posting a total score of 289. Crimson Cliffs, the defending state 4A champions, came in second place with a score of 297. See full list of team scores below.

Crimson Cliffs senior Boston Bracken topped the leaderboard with a score of 68, while teammate Lincoln Markham shot a 70. Desert Hills was paced by Noah Christensen and Jace Fillmore, who each shot a 69.

“Our kids did a great job,” said Desert Hills head coach Ron Denos, calling the match “a great way to start the season.”

“We have a very deep and balanced team this year,” Denos added. “We have 11 or 12 kids that could qualify each week, and any of the six qualifiers could be the low score for our team.”

Next week’s Region 9 match is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 17 at SunRiver Golf Club in St. George.

Crimson Cliffs will be missing Bracken from its lineup next week, as he has qualified for this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship, scheduled to take place at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado from Aug. 14-20.
