Flash flood advisory issued for Kane County; storm cells moving north

ST. GEORGE — Southern Kane County is under a flash flood warning as heavy rain is falling east and west of the Kanab area and the system is moving north by northeast.

The National Weather Service issued the following statement just before 6:27 p.m.: “The public reported thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.25 inches of rain
have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 0.05 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts up to 0.25 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring.”

The current alert, originally set to expire at 4:30 p.m., has been extended until 8:30 p.m. Monday and includes Coyote Wash, Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch. The weather service also reminds people to be aware that flash flooding also can impact urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

Additional precautionary steps from the NWS include the following

  • Move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.
  • Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Dry washes, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.
  • Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
