We recently expanded into a new building in an effort to better serve our patients. In our old office, we barely had room to turn around without being all over each other in our duties. Our new space, by design, is much more spacious. As you walk into the office, you’re greeted with lots of open space. We do provide a refreshment area for patients to enjoy. We also offer a children’s playroom designed like an aquarium so parents can relax while having their eye exams.

Our pre-test room was designed with the intention of preventing bottlenecks so patients could be seen in a quicker fashion to improve the flow of the exam process. It’s one large, centrally located room that allows multiple patients to be tested at the same time.

The new office, which is located within the same business park along Snow Canyon Parkway, also has a separate room designated as our dry eye spa. It allows the patient to have a spa-like experience, surrounded by the music of their choice to help them relax when we’re performing in-office dry eye treatments such as Blephex, iLux, IPL and low-level light therapy.

Our contact lens training room is centrally located for quick and easy access. Plus, each exam room has its own sink and mirror so both doctor and patient can quickly wash their hands when handling contact lenses without needing to leave the room.

Every exam room is wheelchair-accessible and ADA-compliant, making it convenient for all patients. Regardless of mobility level, they don’t have to wait for a specific room to be available.

Moving from an office with two exam rooms to an office with five fully functioning exam rooms allows us to continue using our manual phoropters and bring in digital phoropters as well. We have state-of-the-art digital equipment to stay up-to-date with the latest and greatest.

We have an external photography system equipped with every slit lamp so we can quickly image the external eye without having to switch to another room. This includes the ability to image glands. Also, all pre-test instruments feed electronically into each room so we can pull results up and review and educate from the privacy of the exam room. This includes Neurolens, fundus photography, OCT, K5M dry eye evaluations, topography, AdaptDx and color vision testing.

Our clinical desks within the exam rooms are specially designed to allow both the doctor and the tech who is scribing to work side by side with the capacity for either to type notes into the chart, reducing the length of the exam. Unfortunately, with the advent of electronic charting, in the old space my back was turned toward the patient while I was typing. In our new office, the desk design, with its 45-degree inset, takes into consideration the positioning of the doctor in relation to the patient. This prevents the doctor from ever having his or her back fully turned to the patient, allowing for more open communication.

More often than not, I hear these words, “I love your new office,” and I hear them multiple times a day. That was by design. We wanted to create that one-of-a-kind “Wow!” experience for patients. The murals were hand-picked by my office manager and myself with the intended effect of having the patient in the room feel like they were part of and actually in the environment they were viewing.

Our optical boutique is second to none in appearance. We used the dark cherry red frame boards from our previous office, then chose a white flooring tile and contrasted it with a black backsplash accent wall behind the reception desk to help draw the eye to our logo. Cherry wood molding in the ceiling was used to help blend with our cherry wood frame displays.

We have two distinct yet adjoining optical areas separating luxury from everything else. Our use of dark and light flooring separates the two optical areas. White frame displays will eventually stand as a stark contrast to the dark flooring in the luxury boutique once they arrive. We have brought on McLaren and Nathalie Blanc frame lines and are looking for other luxury brands to complement our boutique. Our lighting amplifies the light and dark contrast while blending the cherry wood finish into the overall décor throughout the entire space.

We again wanted patients to have that “Wow!” experience, but we didn’t want anyone to not feel welcome or feel like they couldn’t afford to come to our office. I think we created the right tone to appeal to all walks of life. With the addition of a few well-placed plants, it will truly feel like paradise when patients arrive for their eye exams.
