At approximately 9:45 a.m., a middle-aged woman in a black Buick was traveling east on Red Cliffs Drive while another woman in a white Mazda was driving north on 1680 East toward the intersection, St. George Police Sgt. Tyrell Bangerter told St. George News.

The driver of the Mazda was attempting to make a left turn, heading west on Red Cliffs Drive, when the Buick hit the driver’s side, Bangerter said. The Mazda driver was trapped in the vehicle, and the St. George Fire Department was ready to assist with extrication, but she exited through the passenger side.

She reportedly complained about shoulder pain and was transported to St. George Regional Hospital via a Gold Cross Ambulance. There were no other reported injuries.

Initially, there were conflicting reports about the crash’s cause. The Mazda driver said she stopped at a red light, waiting for a solid green arrow to turn, while the Buick driver said she also had a green light. Investigating officers utilized Utah Department of Transportation sensors to determine which driver had the right of way based on the timing of the traffic signal.

Ultimately, they found that the Buick driver entered the intersection on a red light, and she’ll be cited for failing to obey a traffic signal, Bangerter said.

Airbags deployed in both vehicles, and because they were inoperable, they were towed from the scene.
