CEDAR CITY — IMPAC Theater Company, the production arm of the InterMountain Performing Arts Conservatory in Cedar City, continues this week and next with its dually cast production of the popular comedic musical “Into the Woods.”

Brandon Burk, IMPAC’s co-founder and president, explained that the production utilizes a mentorship model, wherein two separate casts are selected through auditions, one comprising adults with professional theater experience and the other made up of younger student performers between ages 8-18.

The adult cast already has four performances under their belts, having completed a successful four-night run from June 29 through July 2. After another performance Thursday evening, they’ll stage three more performances this week, which will wrap up Sunday.

Next week, it’ll be the younger cast’s turn, with the students’ three-night run scheduled for July 13-15.

Burk said both casts have been working with and learning from each other, which he called “a really neat process.”

“The adult cast members watch the students’ rehearsals and give feedback and answer some of their questions about how things work backstage and all of that,” Burk told Cedar City News. “There are just so many mentors in the room, which I just think is a great experience for the students because they always have somebody they can go to and ask questions.”

The performances of “Into the Woods” are being staged at IMPAC’s studio in Cedar City, located at 389 N. 100 West Suite 7. The room has been transformed so that it resembles the forestlike setting of the popular Stephen Sondheim fairytale musical.

“It’s been amazing to watch this little space, which wasn’t meant to be a theater, get transformed in such a short time,” Burk noted.
