Cedar City issues safety reminders for spectators ahead of Independence Day parade

CEDAR CITY — Cedar City will once again kick off its Independence Day celebrations with a festive parade, scheduled for Tuesday morning, July 4, starting at 9:30 a.m.

The Spirit of ’76 Independence Day Parade will follow the same route as it has the past couple of years, starting at the intersection of 300 West and University Boulevard (Center Street), heading east three blocks to Main Street, and then going north until finishing at at 400 North near Mountain America Credit Union (see map).

The event, organized and sponsored by Cedar City Lions Club, will once again feature an array of one dozen themed floats depicting important scenes from the nation’s history, including the Boston Tea Party, Betsy Ross’s first flag, Paul Revere’s ride, George Washington at Valley Forge and crossing the Delaware River, the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the adoption of the Constitution. In an effort to remind spectators and participants about parade safety, the city recently put out a public service announcement featuring Cedar City event director Brooke Twitchell and Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow. The two-minute video, shared with permission of Cedar City Corporation, may be watched in the player above.

As previously reported, Cedar City’s Fourth of July parade saw a close call last year when a child’s foot was run over by a trailer, injuring her.

This year’s parade entry application form on Cedar City Lions Club’s website includes updated safety rules, including that each entry must have two designated safety walkers aged 18 or older, accompanying either side of the rear of the entry.

If items are to be handed out, that must be done to either the left or the right by designated distribution personnel, who cannot be the same people as the safety walkers. All items are to be handed out from parade route sidelines, and only from the painted roadside lines nearest the spectators.

Additionally, all motorized vehicles, including motorcycles, ATVs, floats or towed vehicles, must be driven by a licensed driver. The number of people riding on a vehicle may not exceed its manufacturer’s specifications. Open flames and fireworks are prohibited.

The website also notes that the rules “are essential for the safety and enjoyment of the participants and spectators and must be followed or your entry will be pulled from the parade.”
