Calvin Nelson Maloney

August 25, 1951 – June 19, 2023

Calvin Maloney was born in Virgin, Utah to Ray Nelson and Amy Myree Maloney. He spent his childhood in Virgin and attended most of his schooling in Hurricane, graduating from Hurricane High School in 1969.

Maloney met Marie Hall at Jerry’s Café in Hurricane where she was working at the time. They were married on November 10, 1972. They had two sons, Casey, born in 1974 and Shaun, born in 1979.

He worked at St. George Steel as a steel fitter and welder for many years before he received a promotion to night shift supervisor. Calvin had a strong work ethic and took pride in the products he fabricated.

Some of the projects he managed were used for power generation windmills, nuclear bomb casings utilized at the Nevada test site, jet turbine structures used for power generation and many other large-scale jobs throughout the world. He worked there for 42 years until he had to retire due to a work injury.

Maloney was a great mechanic and loved tinkering in the garage. He loved Fords and had many cool cars throughout his lifetime. His favorite was his 71 Ford Maverick Grabber. Many of his vehicles weren’t much to look at when first purchased, but after extensive hours — sometimes years — they looked almost brand new; from the engine to the paint and stripe finishing details.

He loved to spend his time off enjoying outdoor activities. Some of his favorite fishing spots were Kolob Reservoir, Navajo Lake and Panguitch Lake. He also enjoyed camping on Cedar Mountain as well as ATV rides and hunting for arrowheads. He looked forward to the deer hunt each year and being able to spend time with his boys.

Maloney adored his dogs, especially later in life when he cared for three chihuahuas: Jeremy, Jake and Puppy. They were his world and he loved to take them along on his outdoor adventures. They helped keep his spirits up and were there for him through the lonely, rough times that life can bring. Calvin passed away peacefully at his home on June 19, 2023.

Calvin Maloney is survived by his children: Casey (Stephanie) Maloney, Shaun (Melissa) Maloney, grandchildren: Christopher Maloney, Kaitlin Maloney, Isabella Maloney, siblings: George (LaDonna) Maloney, LuWanna Savage, Myree Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Stanley.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 23 at 11 a.m. at the Heritage LDS Chapel located at 1178 South 700 West, Hurricane, Utah.

Family and friends are invited to share tributes online. Arrangements and memorial tree planting by Serenity Funeral Home of Southern Utah, 435-986-9100.
