UPDATED: SR-14 now open again in Cedar Canyon after rockslide caused 10-hour closure

CEDAR CITY — A large rockslide in Cedar Canyon east of Cedar City has prompted the closure of state Route 14 on Wednesday.

Updated June 21, 4:40 p.m. After being closed for more than 10 hours, the road has been cleared and is now open again to traffic as of 4:30 p.m., according to Utah Highway Patrol.

The early morning slide reportedly occurred near milepost 6, approximately 6 miles from the mouth of the canyon. A photo taken by Utah Department of Public Safety in the predawn light shows boulders and rocks strewn across the roadway.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Randy Riches described the slide as “fairly significant” but said there were no reports of injuries or damage to vehicles.

The road closure affects all SR-14 traffic between milepost 5 and milepost 18 (the junction of SR-148). Motorists are advised to use alternate routes if possible.

“At this time there is no ETA on reopening,” Riches told Cedar City News shortly after 8 a.m. “I’ll be surprised if it’s open today.”

Riches added that UDOT crews are currently working to clear the road, as well as assessing the larger impact of the area and mountainside.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
