Hit and run incident in Washington City leads to pursuit, arrest on St. George Boulevard

On Tuesday, an officer was dispatched to a report of suspicious activity after a caller reported a possible car crash in a residential neighborhood near Telegraph Street in Washington City.

The caller heard a crashing noise and noticed a white pickup truck drive onto the curb, followed by the sound of screeching tires as the truck drove off.

While processing the scene, officers found two vehicles, a white Chrysler PT Cruiser and a silver Toyota Corolla, parked along the street that appeared to have been struck by a passing vehicle.

Police allege both were caused by the suspect, which was consistent with the crashing noise described by the 911 caller.

Meanwhile, an officer stopped at the light near Green Spring Drive and Interstate 15 noticed a white Nissan Titan enter the I-15 onramp and noticed “fresh damage” on the front passenger side bumper of the vehicle.

The police report also states that the white Nissan truck “was having a hard time driving in a single lane and was crossing over into the right shoulder.” Due to erratic driving, officers believed the suspect had no intention of stopping.

The suspect exited the interstate and the pickup continued down the off-ramp towards St. George Boulevard, which is when the driver started waving his arms to officers without pulling over or stopping.

“I quickly grabbed my PA microphone and ordered the driver to stop,” the officer noted in the report. The driver eventually pulled the truck over and surrendered without incident.

Police arrested a 34-year-old St. George man, Landon Warren Dennis. While speaking to the arresting officers, the suspect stated he “had no idea he had crashed into two vehicles and thought he had only hit a curb,” police stated in the probable cause statement filed in court.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Washington City Police Department for a field sobriety test — one in which police reported he failed.

Dennis was transported to Purgatory Correctional Facility facing multiple charges, including one third-degree felony count of failing to stop at command of police, five misdemeanor charges for driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, failing to exchange insurance information at the scene of an accident involving property damage and driving without insurance.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
